Then visiting the Hilltribes
of Northern
Thailand
Hilltribe peoples migrated over 100 years ago into the north highlands of Thailand from Burma, Laos
and from China.
They have
preserved their way of life with little change for over thousand years. Comprising seven major tribes,
KAREN, HMONG (MEO), YAO, LISU, LAHU, LAWA and AKHA, each has its own distinct culture, religion, language, art and colourful style of dress.
They live in bamboo houses raised on stilts, beneath which live their domestic
animals, pigs, chickens and buffalos.
The main profession of all these tribes is farming and handicraft. All the tribes are very hospitable and
welcome visitors to their
villages to experience their way of life. We spent one night in the rural LISU
lodge enjoying their traditional food and a dancing performance of the pretty
little LISU kids.
Jinghua wanted to
visit some hill tribes of Chinese origin trying to communicate with the people.
